Recently, I increased the clock speed of my i7 4790K on the MSI Z97 GD65 to 4.5 ghz. The system would crash once, but after rebooting with the same configuration, it stopped crashing again. I wanted to understand why this occurred.

It might be unstable. Consider lowering the overclock and observe the results.
Use tools such as prime95(v26.6 or earlier) or CPUz to put stress on your OC.

Crash or BSOD indicates instability when using those parameters. Lower the OC or raise the voltage until it stabilizes. Make adjustments gradually and verify with prime95 on a minimal FFT configuration.
