CPU O/C advice please
Hi,
I upgraded my mobo and CPU to an i-7 9700k.
I maintain a stable O/C at 5.1ghz with 1.2 voltage and 70C package temperatures.
When attempting 5.2ghz I encounter a blue screen. I've increased the voltage up to 1.215.
Does this indicate I've hit the end of my O/C or should I keep raising the voltage?
This is only the second overclocking attempt, and I'm unsure when to stop.
Thanks
What cooler are you using? Be mindful of the temperatures.
5.1Ghz @ 1.2v works well. Personally, I’d likely stop there.
1.4v is considered safe as long as your temperatures stay below 80ºC under full load. Keep in mind, each CPU behaves differently. Running it continuously at 1.4v to squeeze a small speed boost could shorten the lifespan of your new CPU by trying to gain just 100-200Mhz.
Edit: When you refer to 'stable', do you mean an AVX offset at 0 and running Prime95 smallFFT for over 30 minutes?
How proficient do you need to be?
Beyond showing off, the distinction between 5.1 and 5.2 is barely noticeable.
Whether or not AVX matters also plays a role.
Here are some binning statistics from Silicon lottery:
As of 2/6/2019
What percentage can achieve an overclock with a reasonably stable Vcore in the 1.337 to 1.375 range?
And AVX offset = 2.
I7-9700K
5.2 10%
5.1 35%
5.0 78%
4.9 100%
If your system crashes or restarts then there's a problem and you should identify the cause and correct it. I personally would be driven crazy if I knew my system had an unresolved problem.
