The AMD CPU is firmly attached to the cooler it was shipped with. I put it in place in February 2020 and used the thermal paste provided. It won’t move even slightly, not sideways or otherwise.

Great news, you managed it. Just handle it carefully and gently move it back and forth—it should loosen. Avoid pulling straight up next time; instead, twist the CPU cooler during removal.

Usually works well with a small metal putty knife or a butter knife placed at the edge. For a more involved approach, try heating the area and repositioning it. A bit of effort usually pays off.

Turn the CPU carefully, it might damage the paste. Make sure all pins are straight and undamaged before reinstalling it on the motherboard.

Thanks for the update. I was quite anxious about it. I ended up using a butter knife, which wasn't as smooth as I expected, but the CPU is working okay. I'll still upgrade it, so it shouldn't be a big problem.

You might also power up the PC briefly before attempting to smooth the paste.
