CPU issues with Ubisoft's software on a quad-core system, specifically an R6 dual-core problem.
I just upgraded to a quad core I5 without an HT CPU just to play R6 because they stopped supporting dual-core CPUs. Now I still experience freezes and crashes to desktop right at the start when maps or characters load. I looked into big topics on Ubisoft and Steam forums, and it seems everyone had this issue before the Burnt Horizon patch. They didn’t provide any details or fixes, and no major gaming news sites reviewed it. About 20% of players can’t access R6 anymore after that update. They just suggested upgrading to a system with 2 cores with HT or 4 cores, but my setup still has this problem unresolved, even though I’m above the requirements.
This was a problem with FC4 iirc, you couldn't start the game unless you had 4 threads, whether physical or not, and it's an issue with the update system.
Additional details: Your build? Do you notice spikes in usage when freezing occurs? Did you reinstall everything—game, drivers, etc.?
It might just be a bug from the latest patch.
R6 is among the rare titles that distributes the workload evenly across all cores. My R7 1700 can be used efficiently with my 1080, which runs smoothly at 1080p. Even some 16 TR chips perform well. However, optimizing for high core counts leads to de-optimization and may exclude lower core models. They didn’t have to eliminate dual-core chips entirely, but they made that decision. This might be due to an update glitch or could be resolved by reinstalling the game or uploading it again. Ubisoft support chat proved very useful when I encountered issues, so reaching out there could help.
No significant spikes in usage or problems, maintaining stable FPS, performance, and temperature. Avoided reinstalling after CPU upgrade; system fully detected and activated. Occasional freezing followed by a crash to desktop within the same moment.
I can't revert to Windows 7 and it doesn't seem like a complete solution. The game performed well on dual-core systems prior to the update.
