Playing at high resolution with smooth performance. Streaming is set up without using triple AAA titles. Focus on games like Warzone, Valorant, and Apex. Current setup includes an i7 10700F or similar, a Ryzen 7 3700X, and a mid-life GPU upgrade. I have a Hyper 212 Evo V2 with 32GB RAM, a RTX 2060, and a Corsair RM750. Need advice on choosing the best CPU and motherboard for this configuration.
I'd suggest 3700X with the B550 since it offers room for overclocking thanks to Ryzen's unlocked CPUs—though this depends on the specific board and VRM quality. You also have a clear route to upgrade to 5600/5900X in the future, and I definitely recommend the 5600X if you manage to find one.
I’d pick the Ryzen 7 3700X +B550 because you can boost its speed later and it offers a solid upgrade route if you opt for AMD Ryzen 5000 chips, which perform well. This setup isn’t flawed just because of the 3000 or 5000 series unless you’re using older Ryzen models. With the i7-10700F, you’re locked into a fixed processor, which isn’t ideal for a Z490 board—though it supports unlocked Intel CPUs like the i7-10700K. On a Z490, you’d need an i7-10700K or similar K-series chip to unlock it. For a Ryzen system, consider adding two 16GB DDR4-3200 CL16 sticks (per official specs). You might also explore DDR4-3600 CL18 or CL16 options to push performance further, though the integrated memory controller can be tricky with Ryzen.
Overclocking is about getting the most out of your system. You can just run them at stock speeds without overclocking and maybe if you hold onto this system for a couple of years and the CPU is starting to see its age in games, you can overclock to get more performance and make it last a little bit longer before having to upgrade the whole system. There's an added benefit there with overclocking. Now between the i7-10700K and a Ryzen 7 3700X, they are pretty close in terms of performance.
