So, for a short while now my PC's fans been pretty loud and sure enough, after checking with HWMonitor my Ryzen 7 5800x seems to run at 85°C in idle. I've built my PC around a year ago, so the radiator is not dirty or anything. I've also checked whether the CPU cooler has come loose or something but thats also not the case. Then I remembered that AiO pumps can be prone to die, especially when mounted incorrectly. While I believe I've mouted it as good as can be (on the side, tubes down, and highest point of the radiator well above the pump), I fear that the pump might have still died. Now to my question. The PC reports that the pump runs at 100% or ~3500RPM and when touching the pump and listening it seems to be doing its stuff, could it still be that it died? At this point I don't know what else could cause these temperatures. Also, is it possible to still run the PC at these temperatures without risking the entire machine? I am writing my thesis and really do need it atm, but don't have another CPU cooler as a (temporary) replacement

Hello, I wasn’t entirely confident about the AIO. Have you looked at the thermal paste, and would you consider reapplying it? I’m hoping it’ll make a difference.

Its fine, just make sure it doesnt go over 105c and youll be good

In a tight spot it’ll still work, okay? The 85C idle is really bad, I’ve only seen worse when I start my E8400 close to 5.2g on air with my cheap 4 heatpipe tower. At 1.7v it runs at 90C, which is terrible, and that’s why I’m putting together a rough loop.

I completed the setup now. The initial thermal paste application looked even and not overly thick, but after reinstalling my PC it remained near 50°C during idle—though I’m unsure if that’s typical for a 240 AiO with a Ryzen 7 5800X, as it was likely much lower before. During startup it still reaches about 80°C before dropping, and the fan noise becomes noticeably loud for a short time. Even opening or closing a couple of tabs in Chrome brings the CPU back to around 70°C.

It's quite a performance—50 idle is still quite high. I'd consider returning the AIO unit for a replacement.

Sure, I’d consider returning it. Do you know the ideal temperature for the liquid? Also, does the AIO come with any monitoring tools? If the temperature is low while other things are high, it could affect performance.

Which AIO model are we discussing? Please note I might have missed something. There’s a significant issue with MSI AIOs accumulating debris inside the block.
