I've been pushing my overclock for a long time on my i7-8700k at 5Ghz and 1.275V, with temperatures staying under 80°C during stress tests. Recently I added the GTX 3080 to my custom loop and began keeping an eye on temps again. Now I see my CPU stays around 50°C when idle, only spiking to about 85°C under load. Why is it running so hot in idle?

It's typical to keep the engine running at idle, mainly due to high voltage during this state. But this is just normal behavior.

The strange part is I don’t believe it reached such a high speed during my upgrades.

It seems the system might be running at a higher speed due to the 3080 included in the loop. The 3080 provides solid power even when idle.
