Okay hello fellow tech nerds, I've recently upgraded most parts of my computer, I was hitting 70-90c on my new cpu, R9 5900X, I then installed a new cpu cooler the NH-DH15, Since then the temps tend to go down, sometimes they spike up to like 50-60 rq and then go back down to 40, during gaming/ load they seem to be at arond 50-70C. I'm wondering if this is normal at all or should I be worried? There's no way I installed the CPU cooler mount wrong and idk if I have a somewhat defective cpu unit or not.
It's perfectly typical. I cool my 5900X using air cooling, and the temperatures match what I experience. I noticed spikes reaching 76°C in a Corsair 4000X case, now around 70°C in a Fractal Pop XL Air. Keeping it below 85-88°C is fine. The cooler the unit runs, the more stable you'll be, though it's safe up to 90°C during heavy use. Some minor changes are normal even when idling. My temperature can stay between 39°C and 55°C all day at idle.
Everything looks fine, I'm playing on my 5900X between 70°C and 75°C with a custom loop and PBO.
AFAIK, overclocking isn't about the initial setup beyond BIOS tweaks; it mainly depends on how the BIOS is set up. Manufacturers can lock or unlock processors for overclocking, but you still need to control it via BIOS. If a chip runs at overclocked speed right out of the box, the board must already support that setting. With AMD, there are two approaches: Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) and manual overclocking—both require PBO to be enabled in BIOS. Most likely, one was already active. For Ryzen chips with the X label, PBO works differently than others; for instance, a 5600X may respond better than a 5900X. If your board wasn’t reset after testing, it’s possible the last known state included an overclock. If you changed the CPU too, previous PBO or similar features must have been active. It’s fine if not, but avoid pushing settings too hard. For cooling, custom fan profiles are recommended. A helpful guide is available at the provided link. I suggest setting PBO to auto and adjusting voltages carefully to protect your chip long-term. You can boost speeds when needed, but cores will slow automatically to prevent damage or overheating.
