Considering your current setup and future plans, you might want to explore options beyond the 9800X3D. The 9700X offers a good balance for gaming and multitasking, especially with its performance at higher resolutions. An UK-based build could benefit from local support and availability of parts. Think about how you'll use the system—games like Cyberpunk or Football Manager will test your GPU more than your CPU, so a mid-to-high-end GPU is wise.
FPS usually relies more on the GPU at higher resolutions and settings. A 9700x works fine for you, but it won’t match the 9800X3D as closely, because that’s the top gaming CPU out there. The choice comes down to your budget and what else you’re willing to sacrifice.
It's accurate that at 1440p, the CPU plays a smaller role compared to 1080p in competitive scenarios... Yet a 9800X3D will outperform a 9700X at 1440p when CPU demands are high. I noticed a noticeable boost in performance shifting from a 7700X to a 9800X3D at 1440p with my RTX 4080. Both CPUs complement each other nicely with a 9070 XT, but if you can afford it, opt for the 9800X3D. You might also consider upgrading from a 9700X to a 10800X3D or even 11800X3D in the future (if Zen 7 arrives on AM5).
9600x is a solid choice for gaming, while the 9700X offers more cores and similar performance. The 9800X3D stands out with great reviews at 1440p. Making the decision should be straightforward.
There are alternatives like the 7800X3D if you're looking to cut costs. Generally, it runs roughly 10% slower than the 9800X3D for gaming. Pricing seems to differ by around 15% in the UK, suggesting the 9800X3D might be a better value at £390 instead of the 7800X3D's £335. You could also opt for the 7700X over the 9700X, as they're comparable for both gaming and productivity tasks, except for AVX-512 which is quite specialized. It’s about 20% more affordable for similar performance.
Thank you for the response. It looks like the 7800x3d is slightly slower compared to the 9800x3d in multi-core performance. This might be due to its age; however, I’m leaning toward the 9800x3d since the 9700x is roughly £130 less. For the long term, don’t plan to replace it anytime soon—I’ve been using my current PC for 8 years.
