I can also launch multiple tabs in Chrome or open them haphazardly, which causes a quick spike (99). If I close the most resource-heavy applications, the performance may drop rapidly or it could keep running hot for a short period. To attempt a solution, I removed programs like 'nvidia container / GeForce Experience.' I performed a stress test and Cinemark definitely increased my CPU temperature, but the rise was slower and it cooled down once I stopped it. I kept my CPU and GPU drivers updated, took off the liquid cooler, cleaned the fins, and reapplied thermal paste. Still, nothing resolved the problem. This issue began after I swapped out my faulty GPU (970) for a new one (A4000). I haven’t increased the workload beyond what I used to do, and during CPU spikes I’m usually not engaging in heavy graphics.
CPU (i5 6600k) is working hard to match the GPU performance. I recommend re-seating the cooler and verifying the pump functions correctly. Could you share a photo of the case interior? This helps confirm if the cooler is positioned right and if there might be a blockage from the pump. Changing the GPU shouldn't cause this issue, unless it's a workstation model instead of a gaming card.

The fan is attached directly to the cooler, making it quite compact. I think if something goes wrong, the liquid flow would keep getting warmer continuously. Instead, it gradually increases temperature during a stress test, but jumps up quickly in unusual cases.
It would happen if I were playing games during a problem, though that's rarely true. Additionally, I don't adjust the graphics settings beyond what my previous GPU allowed.
The only idea that comes to mind is running an 8-year-old CPU (launched in 2015) might struggle with newer tasks as it wasn’t built for them. This is common with GPUs and CPUs, which are optimized for specific engines and APIs, so an older model could lag behind newer standards without overheating.
Never encountered such a setup before. Seems the pump is positioned directly above the CPU, with the reservoir or radiator beneath it. Is it currently upright and flat, or mounted horizontally (like a rack-mounted server)? If upright, try placing it down or adjusting its position. The top pump might be lacking liquid (up to 10% air in these sealed systems). At the top, all air is in the pump, so it should handle light loads fine, but under heavy demand it may struggle temporarily. If it's flat or in another angle, I have no idea and will hand it over to someone else.
It's quite old, but it didn't have this problem two weeks ago before my GPU failed. I'm known for keeping many tabs open, and there were no issues then. A few tabs can sometimes cause spikes, but it seems unpredictable. Still, I value the feedback.
It's an Alienware X51 R3. I didn't note that I checked both vertical and horizontal positions before cleaning and re-pasting it. That was prior to the changes. I just switched it to horizontal, which should position the pump at the bottom, and tried again. Still, it tends to overheat easily.
This appears to be malicious software or a mining program running, possibly causing your CPU to operate at maximum capacity and leading to overheating. It seems the application functions correctly under normal conditions but behaves differently otherwise, which suggests Chrome might be hosting hidden malware or ads that mine in the background. Alternatively, the cooling system may be failing and intermittently shutting off. The most effective way to determine the cause would be to perform a clean installation (reformat) or test it on another drive, such as a borrowed hard drive or SSD. These are the only two options I have.
