Consider your needs carefully. For a server handling files, FTP, Plex, and VPN, an i5 offers better performance than an i3. An i5 will likely provide smoother operation across all tasks.

Determine the server's workload: transcoding, budget constraints, and processor choice. Evaluate Intel i3/i5 vs Ryzen/used Xeons. Check storage requirements carefully.

For transcoding, I’m uncertain about the details. It’s intended for a single user only. The budget is around $300, and I already have the necessary storage.

What kind of storage are you using? It would be better to opt for a refurbished server such as a Dell R720. If you prefer something new, a Ryzen 5 3400G would be a solid choice.
