Hello, I'm working on a project for a friend who's on a tight budget. She's an architect and mainly uses CAD programs and AutoCAD for 2D work. After some research, I figured a GPU isn't essential, which helps keep costs down. The choices I have are the Ryzen 5 3400G, the Intel i5-10400, the Intel i3-9400f with RX 580 8G, and the most expensive one. I'm not sure which would perform better for AutoCAD. From what I've learned, AutoCAD needs stronger single-core performance. The Ryzen 3400G offers four cores compared to the i5-10400's six, and it includes a Vega GPU that outperforms Intel's integrated graphics. If I go with the i5, I'm worried the graphics card might not be enough for her 2D projects. The i3-9400f has a GPU, but it seems less powerful overall. Since her previous setup had an older graphics card, upgrading to something like the Ryzen 3400G would be a solid improvement. Any suggestions or alternatives would be greatly appreciated.

I believe AutoCAD handles most tasks smoothly, especially for smaller projects. As long as the workload isn’t too heavy, it should run well on a dual-core processor. However, depending on the specific job, slower CPUs can really slow down rendering. As someone who relies on it for 3D work regularly, I’d say quad-core processors are sufficient. But for large projects, rendering times can drop significantly. I recommend a 3300x or 3100x with a GPU, or even a 2600 if you need more CPU power—something you can likely find for around $100.

Lol that's not true, Autocad works on really old computers, it doesn't need a modern RTX3000 unless you're running complex simulations. I ran Autocad on school computers with built-in graphics about seven years back. Just lower the graphics settings and it should work just fine. I'm currently using SolidWorks, which is more demanding, but it ran smoothly on my old GTX770 when I kept the parts count under 500. Also remember, this was all 3D. If someone is only using Autocad 2D, it'll actually run on a basic machine. I'd suggest an AMD system since Vega 8 is significantly more capable than Intel.

Hey Kisai, I get what you mean, but she was managing with a 2007 ati radeon x1600 up until now... The graphics and 2070 are more than just the budget alone. AutoCAD isn’t her top tool either; the main ones are much simpler.

There's a difference between "running" Autocad on a potato and actually using it for work. The requirements since 2018 have been based on the memory bandwidth alone. You may not need a RTX3000, but you absolutely need something that isn't rubbish. Unless all you're doing is single-room designs, AutoCAD is going to melt anything with a weak GPU. The sweet spot is always going to be around the 112GB/s mark, but you can get away with somewhat less, or don't use any AutoCAD tool newer than 2018 when the requirements changed substantially.

I use it professionally and a 750ti works just fine for what OP is doing. For OP, I’d recommend a used GTX 1060+ with a Ryzen 2600. No need for Quadro or RTX unless you’re aiming for something really impressive. For intricate renders, most large companies use specialized supercomputers or rent them. Overall, a supercomputer isn’t essential for CAD work.
