CPU Debug light
CPU Debug light
I own a prebuilt from CyberPowerPC purchased from Best Buy in November 2018. There was an incident in March 2020 where the screens went black and the fans ran loudly while I played a game. The debug lights showed the CPU was active, and after rebooting everything worked again. More recently, on August 31 this year, my PC did the same while playing Xbox across the room—it was idle with no game running. I haven’t turned it on since then to avoid risking damage. Could anyone explain what’s happening? I suspect an overheating problem, but it also occurred when the machine was idling.
I strongly believe turning on the PC won't harm any parts, since they have protections that will either reduce speed or stop functioning if damage occurs. Are you adjusting the CPU speed? Could you share your complete system details? What is the PSU's model and how old is it?
Crap, I was supposed to add the specifications. The only changes I made in the BIOS were turning on XMP after upgrading my RAM from 16 to 32 GB.
Details:
Ryzen 7 2700X
Zotac RTX 2070 Blower
MSI B450M Bazooka Motherboard
32 GB Adata XPG DDR4 RAM, 2x16, 3200 Mhz, CL16-20-20
In March 2020 I started with 16 GB Adata XPG DDR4 RAM, 2x8, 2400 Mhz, CL16-16-16
Thermaltake Smart 600W, 80 Plus Gold
Two internal drives – WD Green 240 GB SSD and a Seagate 2tb HDD
Two external drives – WD My Passport 2tb (probably) and a WD My Book 6tb
Operating system is Windows 10 Home, running from the WD Green SSD; the power supply is the original, about five years old.
CPU base clock is 3.7 Ghz, but it turbo boosts to around 4.1 Ghz max.
Consider turning off XMP, as it puts pressure on the CPU's memory controller. It might not be effective, but it's worth a shot.
The issue is, we won't know if it works since these events occurred more than three years apart. Still, I'll proceed.
