Hello everyone, I’m reaching out for some guidance on selecting a CPU for my upcoming work build. My main priority isn’t cost, but performance and suitability for my current workflow. As an architect, I primarily handle 3D modeling and rendering, using SketchUp—a single-core application—and Lumion for rendering, which is GPU-intensive and doesn’t support SLI. My setup relies heavily on RTX graphics, so I’m considering a powerful motherboard.

Currently, my thoughts lean toward the ASUS MEG Z390 with 128GB RAM, an OC-enabled i9-9900K (possibly up to 5.2), and an RTX 2080 Ti. I’m curious about alternatives: the Intel i9-9900KF without integrated graphics, or AMD’s X series like the i9-9960X for more cores but fewer single cores. I’m open to AMD as well, though I’d prefer the i9 line if possible.

I have a few other tasks—video editing and similar—that require more cores, but they only make up a small part of my daily work. Before investing in such a high-end system, I want to ensure I haven’t overlooked any better options. If possible, could someone share their perspective or confirm whether I’m on the right path? If the budget isn't a concern, you can attempt the R9 3950X. You'll need an X570 motherboard, which is straightforward to select.

At this price range it's difficult to make mistakes. Intel remains the leader in single-threaded speed, which aligns with your needs, but be aware it will cost more and generate more heat. For AMD, the 3950x delivers strong single-thread performance and offers excellent multi-core value for its price. Keep in mind the AM4 connector is nearing the end of its life, limiting upgrade options. Also, consider AMD Threadripper CPUs; while they may not excel in single-thread speed, their quad-channel support and additional PCI-E lanes could add value based on your requirements. Threadrippers outperform Intel in multi-core capabilities, making them a strong option if future scalability matters.

I also find this concept appealing. My uncertainty comes from not having real-world experience with it. When working on 3D models that need single-core processing, movement, and turning, I’m curious how much real-world performance would change if the clock speed dropped from 5.1GHz to around 4.7GHz. On the 3950x board, this adjustment could significantly impact the snappiness experience. While I appreciate all the advantages the chip offers, my main focus is on my core tasks—how much does a drop in speed affect them?
