Hello. My game performance has recently declined, particularly after upgrading from a GTX 1050 to an RTX 2060. I suspect my i5-7400 CPU and 8GB of RAM are causing bottlenecks. Is this true, and how can I determine it?

Monitor your RAM and CPU usage while gaming. You may be experiencing near 100% RAM utilization.

Performance of AAA games depends on the titles and resolution used. Older games may run well at 1440P, but 1080P could sometimes be limited by CPU or RAM performance. HWmonitor is effective for recording maximum usage. [https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html](https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html)

Memory usage reaches a high percentage, between 75 and 80%, when playing games like Fortnite or GTA V. Previously, CPU usage was at 100%, but now memory is at 75%.

The PC performs exceptionally well with Forza Horizon 4 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider at high-ultra settings, yet it experiences difficulties with GTA V and Fortnite, despite these latter games requiring fewer specifications than the former two.

Certain games exhibit superior optimization compared to others, however, the 7400 will face challenges with expansive open-world titles like Grand Theft Auto V, resulting in reduced performance. The release of upcoming Ryzen 3rd generation processors has led to significant price reductions for initial and second-generation Ryzen CPUs, potentially representing a viable upgrade option if overclocking is acceptable. Alternatively, an i5-9400F paired with an ASRock B365 motherboard would be a suitable selection for your 2060. Furthermore, upgrading to a 1440P monitor would enhance the 2060's capabilities compared to 1080P resolution. You can likely repurpose existing memory, though purchasing a 2x8GB (2666) kit now at reduced prices would offer additional benefits.

I am planning to purchase a 2x8 Corsair RAM module soon. I intend to continue using my 1080p monitor for gaming, as I am satisfied with its performance at that resolution. However, my inquiry concerns whether an Intel i7-7700 or i7-8700 would constitute a beneficial upgrade.

Both would be beneficial upgrades, though they are both costly. Both will necessitate an aftermarket cooler because the original one is inadequate and lacks sufficient cooling capacity. The 8700 would be favored, but it necessitates a new motherboard (compatible with the same socket, though 8th generation processors are limited to H310/B360/B365/H370/Z370 & Z390). The 9400F would be a more suitable upgrade and would represent a saving of approximately $100 or more, while also providing slightly superior performance to the 7700 due to its increased core count.

The 9400F offers strong value, but its future-proofness is questionable.

The 8700 provides six additional threads, though its longevity is uncertain given the rapid pace of PC technology. Investing an extra $150 would be difficult to justify, as those funds could be more effectively allocated towards improved cooling or a larger M.2 NVMe SSD.
