I understand it's something AMD has been working on, at least in testing. When GN met with AMD, they received an engineering prototype for a model that would have been 5950x3d.

I’ve seen that video too.
It seems the decision came down to scheduling, which turned the 7950x3d into a more basic 7800x3d with minimal improvements in gaming performance despite having more cache.
I’m cautiously hopeful the 9950x3d might perform better, but I believe (based on some rumors I’ve seen) we should wait until the 10000 series before they make changes—they’re planning to use a different chiplet and cache design for that one.
