CPU and 9070 XT compatibility pairing
Prices for 9070 XT in Canada have stabilized, allowing me to locate one around 860-900 CAD. However, my current CPU is likely to become a bottleneck. I'm using a 5600X and expect performance to drop further. The upgrade is needed because my GTX 1080 is beginning to struggle. I'm playing competitive games at 1080p with medium/high settings and single-player titles at 4K 60Hz maxed settings. Should I switch to an AM5 motherboard with a PCIe 5.0 board or remain on AM4 and upgrade the CPU? I’m open to spending more if it makes sense to stick with AM4 ($400 CAD budget). Another choice is selling my existing components—motherboard, CPU, and memory (used ~$400 CAD)—and buying a new X870 motherboard for about $300 CAD plus some RAM for $100 CAD. I need advice on what to pick for AM5; it’s hard to decide. The 9600X seemed promising but I’m not sure. Any suggestions would be appreciated, and please let me know if you have any concerns or adjustments in mind. Your build details are shared below: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/dMJfrH
The top choice for AM4 is the 5700X3D. It offers performance slightly lower than the 9600X, yet remains in the same price range. The variation typically stays around 10% across different titles. To surpass the 5700X3D, an AM5 X3D CPU is necessary. If you prefer, you can upgrade your graphics card first and test the results. Should the CPU limit become too strong, you can switch to a higher-end option later. The 5600X still performs well for gaming today.
The resolution you use for gaming is 1440p, and I don’t mind worrying about performance issues as much.
