Hey everyone. I hope this message finds you well. I'm reaching out because I haven't had much success on Reddit lately, and I'm hoping to get some advice. Over the past few years, I've built several computers for myself, friends, and family. While I'm not a tech expert, I've grown more comfortable handling components. But recently, while installing my CPU (i7 9700k) into an Asus Maximus XI HERO, something unexpected happened. When I pulled the lever, there was a lot of resistance. Suddenly, a loud "POP" sounded, and the CPU cover flew off the motherboard. The CPU was stuck awkwardly in its socket, with visible damage to the sides where the latch should be. This is really worrying me. I've attached some photos for reference. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks a lot!
There’s no visible harm to the CPU. The metal cover on the CPU is okay. Regarding the retention bracket on the motherboard, it’s damaged. Would you like me to help you get it back in place?
As long as you avoid touching the pins on the board... or bending any pins, you should be fine. The Frickin Linus video with a blindfold build left me scared for weeks.
Looks like you didn't install the cpu properly into the slot before you tried to lock it. Rule number one, there is never much resistance when installing the cpu, so it'd probably considered damaged by user. check the bottom of the cpu and the socket pins for damage, the mount is just there to hold the cpu, but a cooler can do the same job try to get a return, but most retailers will not refund you in this situation from my experience in retail you may be able to get it to work, but actually check that there's no visible damage before you set both parts on fire.
The retention bracket seems damaged, possibly due to bent pins. It looks like the CPU installation might have been off by a bit, but there are three pins bent together. If you can't get it back, consider checking other options or contacting the seller for advice.
I’m pretty sure I placed the CPU correctly. When installing, I made sure the triangle aligned with the right edge and everything looked proper.
