It depends. The game where I'm being shot would definitely make things more realistic, even if it means tolerating some discomfort. In fact, I believe the key for VR to feel truly immersive is a suit that responds to your body's signals in real time.
I think it would be cool if the pain didn't end your life, and you could adjust it a bit like in some games where you control blood levels. But I recall Palmer Luckey mentioning he wants to create a game similar to Sao in an interview, so keep him away from that!
And then you'd find yourself trapped in a scenario where dying in the game meant real consequences—unless the experience didn't feel that intense. I'm not interested in understanding what it's like to be hurt or harmed.
