I set up a brand new VM with a fresh Windows 10 Pro installation some time ago. After a few weeks of use, I realized the file associations aren’t working properly. For regular file types they don’t change, and for new formats like .php it keeps prompting me with “How do you want to open this file?” even after I set the program and remind it. I’ve tried running sfc /scannow, creating a new user account, clearing registry entries for file extensions, and even assigning different programs to various file types, but nothing helped. I’ve been looking for answers online without success and am hoping someone has faced the same issue before. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Typically, when setting up a software such as a code editor, it prompts you to specify which files you wish to link, making tools like VS Code a viable option.

Is it a recognized problem? Reports suggest some users experienced difficulties following a recent update this year, though detailed information is limited.

I've located it. Thanks @GoodBytes! You avoided the need for a full reset that likely wouldn't have resolved the issue.

Yes. For those on the October Update, the fix is in the Release Preview Ring, meaning it should be available within a week or two if everything proceeds smoothly.

The update gods have smiled upon me! I just opened my VM and noticed it had rebooted during sleep, which was a clear sign... AN UPDATE! I managed to link a PHP file with Notepad++ and... the issue was resolved! I was close to performing a full clean install, but I didn’t realize the fix would arrive that same day.
