Could be worth it for a 3900X?
Considering the price difference, is it worthwhile to opt for a 3900X now or wait for a 3700X this week with an additional $150 CAD?
When your tasks grow to utilize 12 cores, the 3900x becomes more suitable. For most scenarios, a 3600 offers similar performance. A 3700x works well for 8 cores. The choice hinges on your specific workload and project size.
You're unsure about the benefits of the 3900X, so it might not be necessary to add more threads. Consider what your system actually needs.
I spend a few hours each day gaming (MMO) and using Photoshop and Adobe Premiere for work. I’m considering investing now to avoid future decisions about upgrades over the next two years. Right now I have an Intel Core i5-8600K with a Gigabyte Z370 AORUS Gaming SSD, a WD Black 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD, a Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO RAM kit, and other components.
In typical games, having an overclocked 8600K with Zen 2 would actually slow things down. Using QSV in Premiere won’t give you much noticeable gain either. Your setup is fine right now, so hold off on switching to Zen 3 until you can see the benefits.
