Hello, I'm trying to decide the best upgrade path because my budget is limited. I'm currently using a Z490 board with an i7-10700K and an RTX 3090. I've been considering switching to a 10900K or a 11900K CPU. Many people recommend moving to a 14th-gen Intel processor or even switching to AMD, but I need to be realistic about my finances. Upgrading to a newer CPU would require a new motherboard and DDR5 RAM, which quickly raises the cost to around £800–£1000, something I can't afford at the moment. I'm generally satisfied with my setup, but performance in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and while streaming via OBS still feels sluggish, even on lower settings. Since MSFS is demanding for both CPU and GPU, I'm curious if upgrading would make a real difference. Would it provide enough extra speed to improve gameplay and stream stability? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

They're not too bad, just a minor concern. Ryzen's 3D CPUs really stand out for MSFS. If you're thinking about upgrading just for MSFS, the 7800X3D and 9800X3D are the best options. You'll still need a new motherboard and RAM, plus it might require a different processor type either way.

There’s nothing obvious, especially considering the price markup those models offer. The flight sim demands a lot of CPU power, and AMD’s X3D chips are top choice for that kind of game. If performance falls short of expectations, the only real upgrade would be switching to an AMD Ryzen 5 at this stage.

It appears issues only arise in 2024 more often than in 2020, likely due to OBS freezing or encoding problems. Reducing settings in 2024 might seem helpful for easing load, but the improvement isn’t noticeable—the numbers stay the same. My i7 10700k isn’t at full capacity either; I still achieve over 80 FPS without streaming. The main concern is the freeze and slowdowns in OBS, while the Sims run smoothly. Performance remains solid despite the changes. I’d prefer a completely new system, but current funds aren’t sufficient. 9800X3D costs around £430—unaffordable right now. The best I can do is stick with what I have and hope for a better setup later. I’d rather win the lottery and find a way to upgrade without relying on it.

Check your encoding options. OBS won’t assist you—poor performance during encoding can happen if you adjust too many settings at once.

Encoding happens on the GPU, with 3D requiring roughly 40 to 50%, and video encoding around 30%. The CPU might spike to 70% occasionally. In 2025, if older CPU costs before performance were high, consider skipping it.
