Hello! I'm working on improving the GPU in your girlfriend's PC from RX 470 to RX 580. Everything seems fine with the older model, but after switching to the newer one, the system won't boot. It triggers a beep code of five beeps, which AsRock says means "Process Error" or "CPU DXE Initialization Is Started." Most people think the problem is with the RAM, but I haven't changed it. Interestingly, this PC ran smoothly with the RX 580 before, since it was already installed. Could you help identify what might be causing the issue and suggest some troubleshooting steps? Many unrelated details are present. It seems you're still on Windows 10 version 21h2. Upgrading to 22h2 might help. Test the card on another machine to check if it's faulty. Do you have a 470 with 4GB or 8GB RAM? Which version of the 580 do you own? I recall the 8GB model has two PCIe power connectors (8 pins + 6 pins), whereas the 4GB model uses a single 8-pin connector. Ensure the connectors fit correctly and avoid confusing them with ATX12V types, which differ in pin configuration. Good luck!

I just switched to another 8-pin cable, double-checking the connections each time, and the card stays securely in the PCIe slot. It does slightly sag, which makes sense considering its size and weight. When I press the power button, the GPU fans start spinning, confirming it’s receiving power. A few seconds later, I hear the 5-beep code, followed by a pause and then another beep after a short delay. The fans gradually stop one by one, attempting to re-spin every 10 seconds before stopping again. The screen remains blank. I’ve tried various cables and monitors just in case. I’m worried I may have damaged the GPU during the transfer between PCs. I’ll attempt it on my main PC later today.

The system was able to display some information via photos. Starting from the OS, it used the Microsoft Basic Display Driver and things appeared problematic. Now I’m wondering if there’s any chance it can be fixed. Could removing the card from its original PC and inserting it elsewhere have caused lasting damage? I haven’t touched the PCB since the card has a back plate. It had no issues before this incident. Removing it from the PCIe slot with the lock on might have contributed. Is there a method to diagnose the issue and possibly repair it?

It's tough to judge without seeing the card. It might be a static spark, a solder joint breaking from stress, or just time to move to a better GPU. You could clean the contacts using an eraser and rubbing alcohol. You can also swap out the thermal paste. Another thing to consider is upgrading from a 470 to a 480—though in my view, it's only a small improvement. If the 470 is still functional, stick with it. Good luck!

Probably not unless it's still covered by warranty. I'm a bit skeptical... The last time I faced something similar, it only used the basic Microsoft driver. The GPU seemed to be completely failed. Installing drivers caused big problems and prevented Windows from starting.

You might attempt a card reflash using an attool, but the outcome remains uncertain—50/50 chance of success. There was also a well-known BIOS update that required changing a 580 ROM to a 480 for improved performance, though I wouldn't recommend it.
