From a purely gaming perspective, should I modify my i7-6700k? The cooler, power supply, and motherboard are adequate for overclocking. At 4.2 GHz turbo, I'm beginning to doubt the benefit of pushing it further.

It depends on your goals—higher framerates and a powerful graphics card with a high refresh monitor make it worthwhile.
I used a 6700K for three years, overclocking it to 4.5 for the first two years, then disabling it except for enabling MCE after a BIOS update. Since I didn’t push the CPU that hard initially, I couldn’t tell if it made a difference.
Another perspective is questioning the need to overclock when everything runs smoothly—what exact benefits would it provide?

i mean its free extra performance. depending on your gpu and games you play you may or may not really see any improvement in FPS (odds are it won't be all that noticeable)
