purchased six additional w3503 boards and sent them to BinCS. One of them appeared dirty, so I cleaned it but the stains didn’t remove. Using a toothbrush, a spot finally came off—but then I noticed something blueish, which turned out to be corrosion. I had no idea the IHS could cause such damage. I wondered what could lead to this kind of corrosion. Also, the CPU ended up being completely unusable. I couldn’t post 3000 on two boards at 1.7 or 1.86V VTT alongside the other three I tested today. The best one left last night is the most reliable; the previous one I tried yesterday still works. I finally got a DDR3 3400 screen, but I’ll keep it safe and opt for my second or third best since 1.94V VTT seems to wear these chips quickly in air. Building a dice pot sounds tricky, especially with pure air cooling—it’s way more fun destroying L2 records. The second channel is terrible because it won’t boot BIOS; it matches the 3232 I already have. The rejects might need delidding or other fixes. The ones that still run above 3000 on two sticks are probably just for testing degradation or new configurations.
I believe the nickel coating on the IHS was removed, revealing copper that gradually corroded over time. It appears a stronger substance than water would have caused such damage—maybe a harsh cleaning solution. If the entire CPU was cleaned and then not properly dried or treated with an aggressive agent, that could explain the situation.
It might occur if they applied an unusual thermal paste and left it on the cooler for six years, causing corrosion underneath. My unit after five years using a similar substance appeared damaged, though the residue came off easily.
Most of the black spots had been removed already, so I wouldn’t notice much of the blue corrosion. I saw a P5Q Pro that looked similar, with some blue-colored deposits—possibly from saltwater or something like that. Since this country is an archipelago, water is close by. It’s likely the damage was minor; otherwise it would have corroded completely. It might have just been a restart looping before I cleaned the gold pads, which were also slightly corroded (I used a needle).
someone gave you something quite outdated. I use an old CPU cover as a keychain, and despite all the wear it still doesn’t match the quality you’re holding. Nickel doesn’t really rust, and copper turns green when it corrodes, so neither of those would account for the blue color you see. That makes me think there’s some kind of galvanic corrosion happening with mixed metals in a real dumpster.
