Hello everyone, I'm setting up a Truenas Core server on an i3-8100 CPU and have a few queries: Will this CPU be sufficient? How much NVMe M.2 SSD space do I need? It will run Plex, Emby, Jellyfin and will be used for 4K content. I'm wondering about the required RAM—how many DDR4 slots are needed? Can I connect it directly to my Smart TV via HDMI or LAN cable? QuickSync works well with this setup. Minimum 8GB storage required, 128GB is ideal. A dedicated drive for your TrueNAS installation is necessary—jails aren't allowed on it. SATA SSDs are sufficient for booting. For non-transcoding tasks, most hardware should handle it. I suggest 8GB plus an additional 1GB or more. Connectivity should be LAN only; TrueNAS doesn’t provide a graphical interface.
When using Plex, you must purchase a Plex Pass to enable hardware transcoding. An i3-8100 processor might face challenges when performing CPU transcoding for 4k videos. There are no restrictions on the storage options for installing TrueNAS. Remember that no matter the drive size, the whole drive will be dedicated solely to running TrueNAS. You'll also need an additional SSD for your applications.
For that path, verify purchasing a GPU available at https://www.elpamsoft.com/?p=Plex-Hardware-Transcoding. If you and a few companions use the Plex server, the QuickSync features on the i3-8100’s integrated GPU are sufficient.
I'm not sure if the hardware from a Fujitsu Esprimo D738/E94+ fits in a standard ATX case. It's possible the power switch is soldered and the mounting holes aren't ATX-compatible. Please check the manual or manufacturer guidelines for confirmation.
