Core 2 duo e7700?
Core 2 duo e7700?
It seems it's another one of those rare or unpublished CPUs. I spotted mentions of the e7700 and e7800 on a few sites, but nothing else—no images, no listings, no hardware bots. It looks like a cool find at a very good price, though only other odd CPUs I've seen nearby are the X6800 ES sample, which is pricier. The E7700 does seem to exist, but what about the e7800? Have you heard of any other unfinished CPUs? I also know about the C2D e8700 (Xeon equivalent x5270). Anyone else come across these?
I actually located a seller offering HP prebuilt units with an E7800. These CPUs are almost exclusively referenced on one platform, though the E8700 Wikipedia confirms its OEM status which accounts for their scarcity. The E7800 itself would be less valuable compared to the 6M, so it’s likely kept as an OEM or unreleased model.
To demonstrate its existence, I’d purchase it for around $5 USD.
It could be fun to start with a modest hwbot setup but I’m leaning toward an x5260 since it’s also around 5$ and offers more cache and better performance. I might consider an e7800 if it meets the requirements—around 3.33ghz it should run smoothly without being a total waste of space. For content creation, I’d probably go with an 775 for now, but once I need something more powerful, I’ll switch to something like an e77 or e7800. Water cooling would be a priority, and I’m thinking about upgrading to a cooler once the setup is stable. The test without a radiator didn’t last long; it worked briefly before overheating quickly.
It could be that there are additional datasheets for more upcoming CPUs, which might help with some weak overclocking attempts. Once I focus more seriously and aim for lower temperatures, I expect to achieve genuine hardware benchmarks rather than just around 5 GHz under normal conditions.
