Hi, I see you're looking to improve your dad's old PC. You've got a 240GB SSD from SanDisk for the OS and some apps, and you're trying to install Windows 10 on it using a flash drive. The installation keeps freezing at the "copying windows files (0%)" screen. You've tried different drives and cleaned the SSD with the command prompt, but nothing seems to work. Let me know if you need more help!

Checking for activity on the flash drive. Did you stop the installation after a while? Do you recognize the USB port you were using—USB 1.1, 2.0, or 3.0?

The flash drive appears to be functioning properly. I used two different drives to confirm, left it on for more than an hour, and it remained at 0% with a USB port of 2.0. I’m fairly confident about this.

I might use another flash drive and check if installing another HDD works on it. I’m curious if there’s any incompatibility with this setup. Also, test a different USB port. Have you considered making a clone of his existing HDD onto the SSD?

The flash drive may be experiencing issues during installation due to Windows detecting problems with the SSD. Consider testing another drive to confirm if the problem is specific to your current drive. When you mentioned cleaning the drive via the command prompt, did you also run DiskPart to perform a clean install?

You're asking about the process of transferring data from an HDD to an SSD, which is often referred to as cloning. Essentially, it involves making an exact copy of the storage layout and contents of the original hard drive so the new SSD can run the same files and applications.

I plan to switch to another HDD and I already ran diskpart to clean it up.

Are you organizing or structuring the drive before starting the Windows setup? I usually prefer keeping the original drive empty until the installer prompts for installation location, then creating partitions there (by selecting "Advanced" and choosing "New Volume"). This ensures Windows can add any needed partitions and sets up the drive properly for a Windows environment.
