It's really about frustration and waste, not logic. I'm still upset that it broke. I'm also annoyed about having to pay now, when I could wait until the 10th gen for Intel and maybe AMD would lower prices. (Or if Intel does, just like they did with the 10th gen HEDT). I read some notes saying my specific RAM could be overclocked to around 3000, but my IMC on the 5820k was just terrible—like a huge mess. You can't even picture how much time I wasted fixing RAM issues back then, and I even replaced the whole set once to make sure nothing else was wrong. Haswell-E was the first DDR4 release, and the 5820k was reduced for some reason. I'm hoping I can still overclock RAM now since the CPUs have better IMCs, but I don't want to think I can.
Seems like you missed a great configuration. It looks like Intel might already have the 10th Gen lineup rolling out, such as a Core i9 10900X with 10 cores and 20 threads. Probably not a mass release yet. The example here is for purchase, though. I’d aim for around 3000MHz if possible, which could fit on an Intel IMC. If you really need many cores, support for AVX and ample RAM makes AMD 3900X or better a solid choice. A 3700X doesn’t seem worth it compared to a 2700X.
