He must connect the product key to the account beforehand. This step is completely unnecessary. Installing Windows on another device automatically updates the license.

A key from the free upgrade is provided. All received the same standard key, which functions for upgrading, even though your MS account and hardware were registered.

By default, a local account syncs the product key with an ID created on Microsoft servers. If the device differs, it treats it as another PC and prevents sync, so the key won<|pad|> can never activate. However, inserting a Windows 7 key could work, possibly enabling phone activation if no other changes are made. If you connect the account to a Microsoft-linked one, the key stays with that account. Matching specifications drop (likely just the motherboard), and after a clean install and update check, the license should activate automatically.
