I've been installing everything on my fresh Windows setup for the B550 motherboard, RAM, and 5900x over the past couple of months. Now, two months later, I’ve traded in hopes for an X570 with Thunderbolt 4 and ended up getting the Asus ProArt B550 Creator. I didn’t want to settle for the B550, but I did, and now I’m dreaming about the X570. Have anyone swapped these two chipsets? What are the odds I could just remove all the AMD drivers and move my M.2 drive to a new X570 board without running into problems? Am I being unreal for even thinking about it? Or since both use AMD Ryzen chipsets and come from Asus, could it really work out this way? Usually I stick with the safe route and reinstall everything whenever I change boards, but this Windows install looks solid, is recent, and everything seems set up just right. I truly want this new board! But I’m determined not to waste the next few months trying again.
Hey Dylanear, I've read somewhere that you can change the motherboard no trouble, Windows is going to adjust & install what's necessary when discovering new components. I dunno how Window's authorization is going to handle the change, but I'm guessing it'll be fine too. Another thing, is if you're using iLok or any similar key_registration licenses, it's best to disable/deactivate them while on the old board, then re-enable/reactivate them on your new board. Hope you find more info on the subject. Can't wait for the proart x570 too.
I’m considering giving this a shot. The Proart X570 Creator is listed to ship soon (around the 6th), but Newegg.com can’t deliver to Canada and their Canadian page doesn’t show the board. Their support team didn’t help much when I asked about availability on their Canadian site. It might be worth picking it up at B&H and having them send it to me in Canada. Newegg.ca usually adds a big markup, so shipping from the US could be cheaper. I’m also thinking about building a Linux/FreeNAS setup using the B550 board with a budget Ryzen CPU, 16GB RAM, and a SAS/SATA adapter.
You appear to have a solid understanding of the situation. It's important to note that the B550 only works with Zen 2 or Zen 3 processors. The 3000 series APUs and all 1000/2000 series components aren't compatible. The 3300X is currently unavailable again. For an APU, the 5600G seems like a strong choice since OEM-only models are quite expensive. If you require PCIe Gen 4 support, the R3 3100 at $180 is the cheapest option I've found, though it's still significantly over budget. The 5600X listed for $268 on Newegg appears to offer good value, which is encouraging.
