Convert an old DSL modem into a hardware web server
Hello. I recently lost a good friend who passed away due to a house fire. He was quite skilled in his field, and although we parted ways after college, we stayed in touch occasionally. I appreciated our interactions in networking and IT while he focused on software and hacking. He upgraded from DSL to cable internet and transformed his Westell 6100 DSL modem into a simple HTML personal web server with FTP access. I think he removed the modem, firewall, router, and DHCP server components. His personal website ran on it for years until the fire destroyed it. He constantly experimented with such projects. I recall him soldering a RS232 cable inside the modem—don’t know the details, but I’d be happy to help him recreate it in memory. It would be a great tribute for anyone who could assist. His setup followed the path (internet) → Cable Modem → Router → Hacked DSL Modem → Web server.
His website was very small—just four HTML pages and a CSS file, totaling around 40kb. No images. From archive.org
Please accept my sincere thanks for your time!
