Hi, I've been using my laptop for a few months now and recently decided to assemble a gaming rig. I'm curious if it's feasible to use an existing HDD on my new laptop instead of creating a bootable USB drive and reinstalling everything. Since I replaced both the HDD and SSD in the new PC, I want to know if this setup works smoothly.

You may operate the device, but a fresh installation of Windows is required.

The hard drive in your laptop is connected to the motherboard, meaning a fresh installation will be required when moving it to a different setup. The existing drive should function properly, though you may need a mounting bracket for stability.

Avoid using a second-hand operating system on your gaming rig, even if it seems to function. Perform a clean installation. Gaming may experience lag without a specialized OS.

Generally, it’s best to perform a clean install of Windows whenever you move between systems. This removes unnecessary files such as laptop drivers that occupy space and are probably unused on your main desktop. Additionally, you’ll need to purchase a new license since you can’t reuse the same OEM license from your original device on another computer. Starting fresh ensures your PC runs optimally from the beginning.
