You only have an Xbox controller? Consider getting a budget Sony PS3 controller or Bluetooth USB connectors that work with it wirelessly. It’s much simpler than you think.

Windows 10 was built for seamless integration with the Xbox One controller. I’m not familiar with Windows 8, which is odd since someone would expect compatibility. The metro interface looked poor. If the device doesn’t link after a simple USB connection, you’ll likely need additional drivers.

On my Xbox One controller it worked out of the box with Windows 10. For Windows 7, I had to install the drivers myself (there are guides available). I haven't tested it on Windows 8 yet, but if it functions on 7, it should on 8 as well.
