Controller showdown versus keyboard gaming.
Controller showdown versus keyboard gaming.
I've always wondered why gaming keyboards and mice are so widely favored, considering gamepads – such as those used for PlayStation 4 – are also an option. I’m planning to improve my computer setup and want to understand if a gamepad would be a superior choice compared to investing in a costly keyboard.
Handheld controllers, often referred to as gamepads, generally provide reduced accuracy and customizable button configurations—including macro support—compared to a keyboard and mouse setup. Furthermore, you’re not required to invest a significant amount of money on specialized gaming keyboards; reasonably priced keyboard and mouse combinations from brands like Cooler Master can be acquired for approximately $30, while solid mechanical keyboards from companies such as Red Dragon are available around $35-$50.
The optimal control method varies greatly depending on the specific game; first-person shooters generally perform best using a keyboard and mouse, whereas racing games are typically more suited for controller operation.
I concur with anort3. My own setup includes a premium keyboard and mouse – the Asus ROG Claymore and Asus ROG Spatha – though I occasionally utilize an Xbox One Elite Controller and a Thrustmaster Joystick as well. Various games are optimized for different control schemes. Should you request it, I’m happy to share my assessment of which input method is superior for particular titles.
