I recently assembled a new computer for the holidays. Initially, I was utilizing my older graphics card (Radeon R7 370) due to a lack of availability, but I soon began encountering sporadic freezes followed by complete system crashes while attempting to play virtually any game – even Minecraft. I’ve explored a vast array of solutions online and attempted numerous troubleshooting methods. Initially, the crashes were infrequent, but now they are consistently disruptive, rendering it impossible to play games altogether. Specifically, Fortnite invariably crashes during its initial game sessions.

My system configuration includes:
Asus Rog Strix 1060 6gb
AMD Ryzen 5 2600x
8GB 2666Mhz DDR4 Kingston HyperX Fury RAM
MSI Tomahawk B450
Stock AMD cooler
1TB Western Digital hard drive
Corsair RM550x
Windows 10

I have undertaken the following steps:
Reinstalling the operating system
Trying a different graphics card
Testing with a different power supply unit
Verifying hard drive functionality
Running Memtest
Monitoring temperatures during gameplay
Updating drivers

Despite all these efforts, games continue to freeze and crash without resolution. I’m deeply frustrated, having saved for 1.5 years specifically to acquire this system and now it’s malfunctioning. I implore anyone for assistance, thank you!

EDIT: I play all games at their lowest settings to prioritize a smoother frame rate.

The error message displayed when Fortnite crashes indicates: “Assertion failed: [File:Unknown] [Line: 198] Unreal Engine is exiting due to D3D device being lost. (Error: 0x887A0005 - 'REMOVED')" FortniteClient_Win64_Shipping appears repeatedly. Also, kernel32 and ntdll are listed.

Is the CPU receiving adequate cooling during intense usage? You’ve indicated it fails when gaming, but does it malfunction at lower activity levels? It might be necessary to reapply the thermal adhesive.

The system has never malfunctioned when running at a standstill, yet during gameplay, temperatures consistently remain below 60 degrees Celsius. Despite encountering considerable difficulty when installing the CPU cooler and potentially damaging the thermal adhesive, this remains a possibility.

Insufficient amounts, as well as excessive quantities, can lead to the cooling system's malfunction.

However, I doubt that temperature is the issue. I could play Fortnite while using the MSI Afterburner overlay to monitor my temperatures.

Have you recently acquired a fresh or pre-owned graphics card? I experienced remarkably similar issues with an older, secondhand PGY GTX 1060 running Windows 7 which was ultimately identified as defective and ceased functioning. If possible, consider utilizing a different graphics card to determine if that resolves the problem.

It appears the system is resisting a shutdown while I’m executing tests, however, I noticed an increase in CPU temperatures reaching approximately 75 degrees Celsius during periods of instability. This elevated heat may be the root cause of the game crashes, potentially due to substantial lag fluctuations linked to these high CPU temperatures. I plan to investigate this further tomorrow.

It’s secondhand, but I attempted to test it with a different graphics card and it continued to malfunction.

Another user encountered a comparable issue. Ultimately, the root cause was his Ryzen processor operating at an elevated frequency. His BIOS had inadvertently configured an automatic overclock, leading to game freezes or failures. Please verify your CPU clock speed within your BIOS/UEFI settings.

I’m experiencing a problem! Any game I attempt to play freezes and crashes within 5-10 minutes on my recently assembled computer. This occurs regardless of the specific game – Minecraft, for example, frequently crashes after a short period. I constructed this PC entirely myself, and everything worked perfectly until I started playing Fortnite, which crashed within 5 minutes while running at maximum settings.
