Considering the upgrade to a 10GBASE-T network.
I did not consider the RAM caching the transfer so yeah maybe there could be a use case for 10g in the seeable future. Yes, you're absolutely right it had crossed my mind to do the upgrade because I can do it and able to do it right now. I'm in a similar situation with my setup as I'd need 2 10g NIC's plus a switch in the middle so it'll set me back in the neighborhood of around £400. As you mentioned it's waiting on other devices to catch up with the 10g interfaces such as TV's, NAS boxes etc. Another component for me is the TV as I run a Plex server and would be nice to steam 4k without hitting the Gigabit transfer limit which happens often but that's just waiting for the tech to catch-up.
It looks like you're expecting much higher speeds than what's currently available. Most TVs don't have Gigabit ports, and streaming 4K UHD usually caps around 120Mbit. I'm not sure if any devices actually reach that speed in practice. I wonder if TVs even need such fast connections. Still, having a 10G port from my NAS to the switch gives me confidence. That way, file transfers at Gigabit won't interfere with streaming for other devices. I might switch to a WiFi 6 access point later, but I don’t have a card that supports it yet.
