I've been thinking about upgrading my RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB over the last couple of months. Right now it meets my needs, but I've noticed high memory usage during Oculus games and Witcher 3—around 90%. The occasional lag feels like it comes from loading games on a slower drive. I'm worried about potential problems with newer titles. My current setup includes an ASRock B450M HDV, Ryzen 5 1600AF, RX 5700, and the rest of the components listed.

Do you have 1x8 or 2x4 boards? If just one is available, I’d definitely upgrade. With two, it’s still worth upgrading because you seem to face some performance problems, though you might think about switching to 2x8 instead of 4x4.

Upgrade yourself now. A 90% full pagefile already means it needs a lot of space, which can cause lag. Also, keep using dual channel—add another stick if you have a 2x4GB setup.

Absolutely, you'll need at least 16GB of RAM in 2020 for running modern games smoothly.

Micro-stutters usually stem from paging issues, but with ample RAM the disk cache can handle disk loads even on slower drives. I recommend fully utilizing your available RAM in megabytes if budget allows, rather than opting for faster RAM. It's also advantageous to use dual-channel configuration; if you already have a single module, look for an 8GB unit and pair it with another matching set. A challenge arises with memory-timing sensitive chips like Ryzen—different production dates can lead to mismatched modules, making it hard to use the correct one. If you intend to upgrade to a newer CPU within the same memory size later, choose RAM that aligns better with future CPU requirements.

I use the same G.Skill RAM you own but upgraded to a second module for a total of 2x8GB C16 DDR$ 3200MHz. I saw a noticeable boost in performance during heavy tasks and gaming. - I often work with 3D modeling software like Inventor, run a printer using Cura, stream YouTube or Netflix while having multiple tabs open in Chrome, Photoshop, and Lightroom—drive speed improved significantly. (For extra speed, I recently added a second Corsair RGB 2x8GB module with identical specs and saw only a moderate improvement.)

I don’t do any 3d modeling work. This machine is mainly for browsing the web, doing light Excel tasks, and playing VR games. I’m a bit worried about upgrading since I just increased the RAM speed from 2400mhz to 3200mhz. Sadly, this model only has two DIMM slots, so I’d have to sell the existing RAM and purchase two 8 GB modules.

You're asking about the storage setup. I believe you're wondering if a 2x4GB configuration is sufficient for your needs, especially since VR gaming might benefit more than other tasks. You also mention that having two 8GB sticks could enhance performance.

Hi, it's confirmed as dual channel with 2x4GB. The system doesn't show any major slowdowns except minor microstutter in specific games.
