Considering an upgrade to a Ryzen 7 5800X
I own a Ryzen 7 5800X which is considered a top gaming CPU, but I’m looking to extend its lifespan. Would upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5700X3D be a wise choice? I understand the X3D has a big L3 cache which helps with games, but the 5900X itself doesn’t offer much more and still has a large 64MB L4 cache. I’m trying to decide which would give the best gaming performance.
I’m leaning toward the 590Xx being the better value for the price, but I wanted some advice beforehand.
Apologies for the caps earlier. I had a stroke recently and my left fingers are weak, often hitting the caps lock. If you ever see my post in all caps, it’s just an accident.
Actually, the X3D range of processors from the AM4 platform were regarded as the best CPU to get for gaming. On a side note, if you had a tight latencied ram kit, you'd eke out some more performance out of your Ryzen platform.

When that happens this thread and it's relevant suggestions will be rendered moot to the end user in the same boat as you're in now.

include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.
i know the x3d cpus largfe l3 cashe are goof for gaming, but a 5900x isn't much more
To add, where are you located and how much have you set aside for your processor purchase? What sort of tasks(listing app's/games without using an etc) will you be taxing the system with?
Besides the additional 64MB of L3 cache which benefits gaming, the 5700X3D offers lower specifications compared to your current 5800X (base clock 3.8GHz, boost clock 4.7GHz).
The 5900X features 12 cores whereas the 5800X has 8 cores; unless you're using multi-threaded applications like Handbrake or Adobe Premiere Pro, switching processors may not provide significant advantages.
For gaming enthusiasts, investing in a new GPU would be more practical.
If you prioritize highly threaded tasks, a 16-core 5950X could be a better fit.
I'm currently using a 3800X on one system and a 7950X on another. The latter performs notably better in Handbrake video editing due to its increased core count.

Are you correct in assuming you have three Hynix 3200MT/s DIMMs and one Micron 2666MT/s DIMM? This configuration isn't optimal for several reasons. One pair of DIMMs would be completely incompatible.
I suggest swapping the slower Micron DIMM for a faster Hynix model (ideally with the same part number as the other three). Although it won't form a perfectly matched set, it's an improvement over your existing setup.
If you end up with four identical Hynix DIMMs, you might be able to boost XMP speeds, but using four instead of two could affect stability if you push XMP settings too high. You can run MemTest86 to verify RAM reliability. Overclocking 128GB (four 32GB modules) can become complex.
What speed are you actually running the memory at? For example, 2133MT/s, 2666MT/s, 3000MT/s, or 3200MT/s?
benchmasrks recommend the 5900c as the best choice. These processors are seen as excellent for gaming thanks to their L3 cache. The 54900X also offers the same L3 cache level.

However, the memory RAM listed isn't accurate. I have four 32GB SSR3-1600 Hynix sticks. It's not perfect, but I plan to upgrade to 128GB for about 30 dollars. I initially assumed this RAM combination would work well, but after some trial and error due to poor matching, I ended up with a different setup.
I originally saw the four 32GB units didn't pass the test. When I asked the seller, they confirmed all were actually 4GB sticks, so I adjusted my order accordingly.

The 5700X3D usually outperforms the 5900X in most gaming scenarios. There are many solid reviews in print and on YouTube, especially those highlighting games you actually play. Keep in mind that not every title benefits equally from the extra cache in X3D processors—results depend on your specific games.
When experimenting with video editing software, certain programs show limited improvement even with faster RAM on AMD processors. The variation in performance between 4400MT/s and 6000MT/s in Resolve on AMD is relatively small. While this case is specific, it highlights that some applications don’t gain much from XMP overclocking. Others demand significant memory resources, especially for high-resolution projects, and your system’s 128GB RAM offers more capacity than my 64GB. You’re less likely to run out of available memory compared to me. I’m not considering the extra advantage of more GPU VRAM in this scenario. If your focus is on gaming, are your current frame rates sufficient? If games perform adequately, do you really need to increase RAM for higher FPS numbers? Ultimately, it’s a personal decision based on your priorities.

I wouldn't suggest swapping out CPUs in your setup. Any improvements from changing them would be minimal, especially based on the apps or games you run. Keep your investment by postponing a platform upgrade. Your 5800X should suffice for most needs now and for several more years.
