Considering an AMD upgrade alongside an Intel system — would it make sense financially?
I’m considering a switch from Intel to AMD for my CPU. I wanted to see if upgrading would make sense given the recent replacement of my old 1080p monitor with a 1440p display and the drop in FPS for some of my newer games because of the recent NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti being limited to PCIe Gen 3.0. My current hardware includes an Intel Core i7-10700K, an Asus TUF Gaming Z490-Plus with PCIe Gen 3.0 support, Corsair Vengeance memory, a MSI RTX 4070 Ti with 16GB VRAM, and an SABRENT M.2 NVMe SSD. My CPU and storage are outdated, making speed improvements difficult regardless of the upgrade path. I’m planning a build with Ryzen 7 9800X3D, Corsair Vengeance Grey 32GB DDR5, and an ASRock B650 PG Lightning ATX. This change feels like a fresh start since I’m used to Intel, and I’m eager for any guidance on whether it would really help.
I'm working with a 4070 no-Ti, no-Super at 4k. It performed well at 1440p too. The 4070 Ti Super also handles 1440p fine. A 9800X3D might offer some gains in game performance, but the boost should be modest—around 10% at most. It won't be obvious in regular tests, just a slight edge in benchmarks. It can also aid non-FPS tasks like quicker shader setup and faster loading times. I've seen similar improvements when moving from Skylake-X to 7800X3D, with load times noticing more than the FPS change.
