Unless you're using advanced techniques like CPU-based multi-core rendering or systems with more than 8 cores/threads, a 5800X will perform significantly better than a 3900XT for most everyday tasks—particularly gaming. The performance per instruction on a 5000-series chip makes it a clear choice compared to older models. For video editing, the impact is less critical unless you're doing heavy rendering or animation; in that case, the difference between these chips is noticeable, especially if your software uses CUDA acceleration. I don’t do complex video production—just basic tasks like cropping and cutting 1080P clips. Enabling CUDA cores makes a huge difference; the 2700X with GTX1660S would likely outperform a 5900X if you disable it. Building a 3900XT is mainly for cost savings on components, but only if your current board can’t handle a 5000-series CPU. Overall, the 5800X offers the best balance of price, cooling, power efficiency, and future readiness right now.
Clear understanding. The Ryzen 5000 represents a substantial improvement over the Ryzen 3000 lineup. I recall the performance difference when the Ryzen 5000 models launched and how impressive they were. My video editing tasks are quite demanding, but I haven’t been as frequent lately. The CUDA acceleration really stands out. The NVIDIA NVENC encoder also performs well for rendering after upgrading to my GTX 1080. With this year’s BIOS update, even 370X boards support the Ryzen 5000 series. I’m using a B450 chipset board. The VRM design isn’t outstanding, but it works for older Ryzen 9 and 5800X models as noted on PCpartpicker. The price is definitely a plus; I never considered the 5800X before since it usually exceeded $300. I initially thought my Ryzen 5 was sufficient, coming from an Intel i7, but now I’m paying around $100 for a Ryzen 5. It’s great that I use AIO watercooling and the PSU fan specs give me confidence. The future-proof nature of this system makes me feel secure about the 5800X. Single-core performance is noticeably better than the Ryzen 3000 series, especially for light tasks like browsing or file transfers. Cost efficiency was an important factor, which I hadn’t thought about before. I didn’t mention using a 650W PSU, so I haven’t checked if the Ryzen 9 would run optimally with my GTX 1080. Overall, the 5800X seems to be the top choice over time. I’m also hoping the Ryzen 9 5900X becomes more affordable, but it doesn’t seem necessary right now. Thanks!
