You're considering upgrading your PC and need advice on the best CPU within your budget. Your current i7 4790k isn't performing well, so a new one could help. You're looking at options between 250-400€ for CPU, motherboard, and RAM. The CPUs you mentioned range from around 99€ to 220€. Since your GPU is a GTX 1660 Ti, you likely want something that complements it well without breaking the bank. Given your gaming needs at 1080p, a mid-range CPU like the Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 7 5700x would be a solid choice. They offer good performance for gaming while staying within your budget. Make sure to check motherboard compatibility and ensure you have enough RAM for your games.

They work identically at 1080p. Both systems run smoothly at 1080p with 144Hz, using 6700xt and 6800Hz.

I’m focusing on AMD options since a full ATX board and Intel MB are quite costly. The 5600 seems like a solid choice.

For the 5600 paired with a B350 and the 12400f with a B660, the AMD boards seem to be in a tough spot—requiring some work in the BIOS, which might bring satisfaction or frustration. Intel boards are fixed and don’t need much tweaking; you can adjust XMP and unlock power settings if needed. Both CPUs run at around 80W, keeping temperatures between 50-60°C with a tower cooler, which isn’t a big deal. Generally, the B660 offers more M.2 heatsink choices compared to the B550. Ultimately, choose the lowest cost CPU plus motherboard that meets your requirements.
