Hey there, I'm pretty new to hardware overall, so would love some guidance on a matter: As of now my PC has 2 8GB RAM modules and I recently bought a third to one to make it to 24GB, nonetheless recently I was checking more on the matter of how RAM works and why modules are usually placed in sockets 1-3/2-4. So basically my question is, would I be negatively impacting my PC's performance when including the new RAM stick or should I just wait to buy the 4th one in order to preserve the performance it's got right now

It's best to keep everything consistent for the highest performance. Using sticks from the same batch ensures compatibility. Different batches, even within the same model, can cause problems. If you must return it, try to get a matching pair—unless exchanges aren't an option. A third stick might work, but it could affect your setup depending on your hardware. Mixing different sticks is still not ideal, but it's better than having just three that may limit overall speed or data access.

It seems you've already purchased the third stick. Since it can't be returned, consider selling it and using the money to buy a two-pack instead.

Specs of full pc? Specs of the original ram kit and the ram you just bought? Country? 3 stick is not ideal but ive run 1520 ddr2 on that goofy config before although they were all matching with the same ics Basically 16gb is running in dual channel but the extra 8gb once the 16gb from the 2 other sticks are completely used up effectively runs in single channel cause theres no accompanying stick on the other channel. Still better than virtual memory on an ssd/hdd though

Memory channels used to require balancing for dual-channel performance. For more than a decade, multi-channel configurations could operate without balance. The memory controller handles it seamlessly. Single CPU systems may support 1, 2, 3, or 4 channels. (Remember LGA1366 was triple channel?) If you're not pushing overclocks, don't stress about it. What makes you think you needed that extra 8GB?

I’m ready to work but not to showcase. Most agree we should use the full quad stick or adjust it by hand. It’s not the final solution, though OP thinks it’s manageable.

The main concern is understanding this. You might have needed extra memory. Adding three sticks will cause a minor slowdown, though not a major one. It's preferable to use identical sticks, but if not, ensure they match.

Considered switching to a different RAM configuration. Overall performance was excellent, so it depends on whether you prefer a larger stick set or four modules from the same batch.
