I recently assembled my first new PC in ten years, which means I’ve been away from the build scene for some time. I’m familiar with XMP and its impact on RAM performance, but I only recently discovered EXPO. Both functions aim to optimize RAM speeds, though EXPO is AMD’s adaptation of XMP. It looks like both settings are available in my motherboard’s BIOS. Should I choose one over the other? My board is an AM5 Gigabyte X870 Gaming X WiFi 7, and the RAM sticks I purchased are 2x16 32GB Corsair Vengeance 6000MHz (CL36). On Newegg’s product page, the specs list Intel XMP 3.0 but don’t mention EXPO. Considering this, should I enable XMP since my RAM supports it? Or should I opt for EXPO because of the AM5 platform? It really doesn’t matter much right now; I could just pick randomly. As of now, I haven’t adjusted any settings and my RAM is running at 4800MHz.
I can't directly attach or share screenshots of HWInfo or CPU-Z profiles. However, you can view the SPD profiles by checking your motherboard's documentation or using compatible software to access them.
The SPD profiles will appear with temperature and voltage data.
I own two distinct Vengeance 6000C30 units, both previously sold under the EXPO branding. When accessing the device, I notice both EXPO and XMP profiles are present. Where they match in settings, the numbers are identical. EXPO includes one parameter that XMP lacks, while XMP contains one that EXPO omits. It seems AMD intentionally made them different to avoid exact duplication when copying Intel's work.
When changing EXPO, does it show you the timings? If yes, and it's these timings: Then you could use EXPO. There's also nothing wrong with using XMP with AMD CPU, XMP is as old as some teenagers right now. And EXPO is like a baby child, it released with AM5 in 2022. Intel XMP:
The clock speeds on that board aren't extremely fast. Most 6000MT/sec kits today run around 30-36-36-76 MHz, which unless they're EXPO certified could cause problems on AM5. Even with the 2x24GB configuration I own, it appears in UEFI as XMP and functions perfectly at a 1:1 UCLK:MCLK ratio.
