Hello everyone! Our agency uses around 50 PCs from Fujitsu Esprimo, including models like the E85+(Intel i3-4130) and E720+(Intel i5-4690). The E85 has a slower performance compared to the E720, which features an SSD. With our new virtual desktop infrastructure that relies on thin clients over a government network, we need guidance on whether these PCs can be repurposed as thin clients. Additionally, we're considering upgrading their RAM and replacing the HDD with an SSD for better efficiency. Please help us make a well-reasoned decision while keeping in mind that all devices are connected via the government network and GPO policies are in place.

It might vary based on cost considerations. It's hard to find them right now, particularly if you need to use approved vendors. Are they linked to a private network? If not, which operating system is in use?

They installed a Samsung PC3-12800 with DDR3-1600 memory and 4 GB RAM. The requirement is all PCs must be linked to the government network domain internally. They also gave us Windows licenses.

I inquired since Windows 10 ceases security patches (especially for consumer devices) and Windows 11 isn't confirmed for 4th generation systems. It's unclear if upgrading would be beneficial. Are there options to get pricing details? If you must use an authorized vendor, the cost could be prohibitively high.

They can, but it varies based on the specifications required for your thin clients. From what I've seen, it mainly hinges on who handles the upgrades and/or replacements. Most of the expense tends to come from labor. If the IT team performs the work, costs should be lower than when outsourcing. Ultimately, it's more about who carries out the task than the hardware price itself. Good luck!
