Consider using pbo with tjmax set to 85c and curve optimizer at -20w. This is your fourth option when selecting in the BIOS. As a new user, here’s what you should know: this setup is common for balancing performance and stability. The pros include better thermal management and smoother overclocking, while the cons might involve higher power consumption or increased heat output. Make sure your PSU can handle the 1000W rating and verify compatibility with your ASRock X670e Pro. Let me know if you need more details!

It reduces the CPU voltage and limits the maximum temperature it can handle. Benefits include cooler operation. Drawbacks are potential instability and a slight dip in performance under certain tasks where the CPU hits TJMax—rare on the 7800X3D, so not a major concern. If you're considering trying it, proceed cautiously; if you encounter a blue screen or unusual behavior, turn it off or switch to a gentler optimization profile. Generally, -20 volts should be sufficient for most chips.

Your 5950X struggles to maintain temperatures below -15°C across all cores. The 7800X3D likely won't support PBO unless it's an older BIOS version. AMD advises against overclocking any X3D CPU to avoid cache issues, since the larger extended cache is more affected by heat than a standard core. If you manage to reduce voltage using tools like Curve Optimizer and the system remains stable, the chip should operate cooler, leading to better longevity and performance.

That was my setup with the Ryzen 5000, though the Ryzen 7000 line usually offers a bit more flexibility (I've tried six units and only one managed to hit -20 all-core). PBO functions well on the 7800X3D even with the newest BIOS, just avoid static voltage or multiplier tweaks.

Yes, it differs from the 5000 series.

It functions mostly similarly, but the 7000 series chips appear to come with a bit more flexibility from the start. The supported value range has shifted (according to what I recall, you can reach -50 on some boards instead of just hitting the lower limits), though that's the most noticeable difference between the two. I haven't found a model where -15 fails, so every AM5 build ends up using that optimizer setting. -20 is reliable on most boards except the worst ones, which is good news if it's a simple adjustment. Just be aware of the occasional blue screens and crashes during idle when the optimizer isn't stable, and you'll want to watch for those signs.

I think my 5950X isn't the best performer, but it should handle -18 on one core or at least prevent BSOD. My RX 6800XT is also pretty much not a fan of undervolting—it was stable at 1015mv for a while before things started failing.
