Switches are essentially identical, and what counts is the specifications—like having all gigabit ports or opting for cheaper non-managed models.

It's the optimal setup and that's exactly how I configured my home network. Three Asus routers connected together without any impact on my internet speed.

Set it up by connecting it to either the Router or the Modem. If the modem ports are busy, switch to the router. Determine if you need bridge mode or another configuration based on your setup requirements.

Link your new router to your existing router using an Ethernet cable. Then navigate to the settings on each device and configure it as an access point. The exact process may vary by model, but the general steps are usually similar.

I believe everyone overlooks a key issue—the current router ports are all busy, so they require additional ports on the existing device. Simply bringing another router into the same space won’t solve the problem, as there’s still no available connection point. A switch will be essential in this situation.

In addition, considering they're relocating with another person means they'll need to resolve any router-related issues with the homeowner. A new switch offering extra ports and a compatible mesh router would likely be the optimal choice.

A Gigabit switch works just fine. Unless you're concerned about network security, that's all you should worry about.
