I’ll note that the PCIe 4.0 standard came out in early 2017...so you can decide whether to wait 2-3 years for PCIe 5.0. Currently, the most powerful GPUs on the market don’t even make full use of a PCIe 3.0 X16 interface, let alone PCIe 4.0.

PCIE 4.0 and 5.0 offer little value to the average user. PCIE 3.0 x8 covers most GPUs well enough. PCIE gen 4 x4 should work with any existing GPU. The main limitation is that only a handful of GPUs support gen 4.

I really hope Thunderbolt shifts to PCIe 4 so we could establish a PCIe 4.0 x4 connection for external graphics. This would prevent us from being limited by external GPUs and give us a total of eight PCIe 3 lanes.

It seems unlikely a PLX chip can achieve that function

Some chipsets provide specific features such as Intel's HX10 offering only PCIe 2.0 lanes despite connecting via a 3.0 bus to the CPU.
