You're considering an upgrade after four years on Windows 7 Ultimate, especially with the new Xbox Game Pass. It's a good idea to evaluate your needs and usage before deciding.

Avoid performing the update procedure; otherwise, you risk significant problems later on. Perform a fresh installation carefully.

If your motherboard isn't too outdated—such as from the EFI support era around the 3000 series Intel—upgrading to Windows 10 shouldn't cause any issues.

It's actually quite funny how switching from Windows 7 to 10 went smoothly with no problems at all. The performance differences are clear, but everything worked just fine. Just remember to save your files before making the change.

I suggest choosing Linux instead of Windows 10... remembering that I rarely use Linux and mostly stick with Windows 7. I do a few silly things, but I’m not ready to risk falling into Windows 10.

Windows 7 will no longer receive security updates starting in January 2020. To stay protected, aim to transition to a supported version by December 2019 at the earliest. If you favor Windows 8, switch to Windows 8.1 which offers extended support until January 2023. For those with no restrictions or eager to move forward, upgrading to Windows 10 is the best option right now.
