I set up my gaming rig with a 1TB SSD and a 1TB HDD. After installing Windows 8.1 on the SSD and switching to Windows 10, everything is running smoothly. I’m considering splitting the SSD into separate partitions—100GB for the operating system and the rest for data. I also have a larger 1TB HDD available. My goal is to organize them as drives C, D, and E between both storage options. The main issue is that Windows 10 on the SSD appears as a single partition, and shrinking it only reduces about 500GB, leaving too much space for the OS. I’m unsure why this isn’t working and need guidance. Many people now skip partitioning due to reliability improvements. Since I already have another HDD, my main worries are: if something goes wrong, could I still boot from the HDD and access SSD files? Also, I plan to make a recovery USB and regularly back up important data. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brian.
The main goal of partitioning is for easy future installation. Otherwise it remains just a directory. During clean installation you get the choice to decide which partition gets the operating system, leaving the other one unchanged.
If your OS fails, you should act quickly. Check if the SSD data is still accessible before proceeding. Retrieving information from the SSD might be possible depending on its configuration. Partitioning the drive into 100GB for the OS isn’t recommended unless you’re certain about the system requirements.
When the operating system fails, the partitions remain intact. If the SSD fails, all data is lost. If the disk manager won’t let you reduce the drive to 100GB, reinstalling the OS might help—when prompted, choose a partition there. Honestly, it’s hard to picture why Windows wouldn’t support a 900GB partition unless the SSD contains so much data it can’t locate available space.
It's a brand new SSD, which makes it tricky to free space since reinstalling Windows isn't the only option. Do you have any ideas on creating a 100GB partition without reinstalling the system?
